How to Take Better Before-and-After Photos in Your Salon

Simple Phone Photography Tips to Make Your Work Shine Online

You’ve just created a stunning makeover or a flawless fade, but your photo doesn’t do it justice. Sound familiar?

As a stylist or salon owner, showcasing your work visually is essential. But blurry, dull or badly lit photos can actually hurt your brand.

Don’t worry, you don’t need a fancy camera or expensive equipment to take amazing salon photos. With just your phone and a few smart strategies, you can create before-and-after pictures that stop the scroll and bring new clients through the door.

Let’s break it down.

💡 1. Use Natural Light Whenever Possible

Lighting can make or break your shot.

  • Position your client near a window for soft, flattering light.
  • Avoid overhead lights that can cast unflattering shadows.
  • Never shoot in front of a bright window (you’ll create a silhouette).

💡 Pro Tip: Turn off warm salon lights if they’re clashing with your daylight – cool tones often work better for true colour accuracy.

📐 2. Frame the Shot Like a Pro

Consistency is key with before-and-after photos.

  • Keep the background clean and clutter-free.
  • Shoot from the same angle each time (front, side or back).
  • Use the grid setting on your phone to line things up evenly.
  • Don’t zoom. Get physically closer for better resolution.

📱 Bonus Tip: Use portrait mode to blur the background slightly, making the client the star of the show.

📸 3. Take Photos Before You Style

For before shots:

  • Comb the hair neatly
  • Avoid shadows
  • Use neutral facial expressions

For after shots:

  • Style to show off texture, colour and shine
  • Get a few different angles
  • Snap a short video clip too (more on that below 👀)

🎨 4. Edit with Intention (Not Filters)

Don’t over-edit! But a little polish goes a long way.
Try apps like:

  • Canva for simple edits and an easy to use interface
  • Lightroom Mobile for pro-quality tweaks
  • Snapseed to adjust brightness, contrast and colour
  • Retouch to remove background distractions

✂️ Focus on enhancing the hair, not smoothing skin or changing the look entirely. You want authenticity and impact.

🎥 5. Go Beyond Photos with Short-Form Video

Photos are great, but videos perform even better.
Reels and TikToks of your transformations can reach thousands more potential clients.

Imagine this:

  • A before clip of your client turning around
  • A snap of foils going in
  • The finished look with a slow-motion hair flip

🔥 This is the power of short-form video and it’s exactly what we teach inside our course, The Salon Social Media Video System – Mastering Short-Form Video Marketing for Hair & Beauty Salons.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Plan fast, scroll-stopping content
  • Film with just your phone
  • Edit in minutes using free apps
  • Post strategically to get bookings from the right people
