3 Marketing Mistakes I See Somerset Businesses Making

Small changes that can make a big difference to your visibility, enquiries and growth

As a digital marketer, I spend a lot of time talking to small business owners across Somerset.

Many tell me the same thing:

“We’re doing marketing, but we’re not seeing the results we’d hoped for.”

They’re posting on social media, updating their websites, networking locally and sometimes even running adverts. Yet enquiries remain inconsistent, growth feels slow and marketing often becomes another task on an already overwhelming to-do list.

The good news is that most businesses aren’t making huge mistakes. In fact, they’re often doing many things right. Usually, it’s a few small areas that need adjusting.

Here are three of the most common marketing mistakes I see, and how you can avoid them.

1. Posting Without a Clear Goal

Social media can be a fantastic tool for building awareness and attracting customers, but only when it’s used with purpose.

One of the most common mistakes I see is businesses posting content simply because they feel they should.

Before creating any piece of content, ask yourself:

  • What am I trying to achieve?
  • Who am I trying to reach?
  • What action would I like someone to take?

Some posts might be designed to:

  • Increase awareness of your business
  • Build trust and credibility
  • Showcase recent work
  • Generate enquiries
  • Drive traffic to your website

When you know the purpose behind a post, it’s much easier to create content that delivers results.

2. Talking About Services Instead of Benefits

Business owners are naturally passionate about what they do, so it’s understandable that many social media posts and website pages focus on services.

The challenge is that customers are usually more interested in the outcome than the service itself.

For example:

Instead of saying:

“We install air source heat pumps.”

Consider saying:

“A more energy-efficient way to heat your home while reducing running costs.”

Rather than:

“We offer bookkeeping services.”

Try:

“Helping business owners save time, reduce stress and stay on top of their finances.”

The service matters, but the benefit is what captures attention.

When creating marketing content, think about the problem you solve and how your customer will feel after working with you.

3. Starting and Stopping Marketing

This is perhaps the biggest challenge for small businesses.

When enquiries are flowing and work is busy, marketing often slips down the priority list. Then, when things become quieter, there’s a sudden rush to post more, run adverts or update the website.

The difficulty is that marketing works best when it’s consistent.

Regular content helps to:

  • Keep your business visible
  • Build familiarity and trust
  • Demonstrate expertise
  • Stay front of mind when customers are ready to buy

Many people won’t need your service the first time they see your content. They may not need it the tenth time either. However, when the time comes, they’re far more likely to contact a business they’ve seen regularly and recognise.

Consistency doesn’t mean posting every day. It means having a realistic plan and sticking to it.
